Hackathon

Hack The Future - Aquatopia Hackathon

Last year, I participated in the Hack The Future hackathon in Antwerp. The event took place at the Flanders Meeting & Convention Center and revolved around the theme Aquatopia, with a strong focus on oceans, environmental awareness, and technology.

The day started early with the registration and introduction session, where the organizers explained the scenario and introduced the challenge. Each team received a specific assignment together with guidance from coaches who helped explain the context and objectives of the exercise.

Our challenge mainly focused on interacting with a database environment through SSH access. One of the first tasks was establishing a connection to an Oracle database server. Since this was not a technology I had worked with before, a large part of the challenge involved learning how to work with the environment and understanding the required syntax under time pressure.

Once the connection was working correctly, the practical tasks began. These included retrieving information from the database, modifying records, deleting data, intentionally breaking parts of the system, and then restoring everything back to a working state. The challenge combined technical problem solving with teamwork and communication, especially because we continuously had to adapt while learning new things throughout the day.

Besides the technical side, the event itself was also very well organized. There were opportunities to take breaks, explore the surroundings, and interact with students and professionals from different backgrounds. At the end of the day, every team presented how they approached the challenge and what they learned from the experience.

Although my team did not win the competition, I still found the hackathon to be a very valuable experience. It was interesting to work in a high-pressure environment with unfamiliar technologies while collaborating closely as a team. Events like these are a great way to step outside the classroom environment and experience a more practical and problem-solving oriented side of IT.
